A truck driver is a person who earns money by driving a truck, semi truck, box truck or dump truck. Truck drivers are meant to transport raw material or finished items from manufacturing plants and retail distributors. They are responsible to have a check over mechanics of their trucks to ensure a safe and steady transportation.
Types of truck drivers
There are three types of truck drivers and so trucking system:
1. Owner-drivers: They are also known as double stuffs either get their truck by either lease from a company after a contract to carry goods on a large commercial level for that specific company or a number of different companies (TheTruckersReport.com, 1999).

Commercial drivers are enforced to drive for 11 hours in a 14 hour’s time period. After this work out, they are forced to take rest for 10 consecutive hours, Daily employed drivers are not allowed to drive for more than 70 hours in a span of 8 consecutive days. A daily logbook is required to be maintained by truck drivers to keep a record of their work and rest span.
New Hours of service regulation came into effect on 1 July, 2013 which requires drives to take a break of 30 minutes before 8 hours of duty approaches. There is a report of shortage of truck drivers in United States due to low retention rates (Badkar, 2014).
There are different methods available by which truck drivers are paid. They are paid on monthly or hourly basis. The method by which driving license is issued and regulated drivers varies from country to country, e.g. in Australia heavy vehicle license is issued and regulated by states but in Canada it is issued and regulated provisionally.
