An increase in diabetes has proven that the disease is becoming more common than before. More than 220 million people worldwide have been known to have diabetes and the World Health Organization predicts that the number of diabetes will increase much higher by 2030.(World Health Organization, 2010).
There are two main types of diabetes which is diabetes type 1, which is known as insulin-dependant diabetes and diabetes type 2 which is known as non-insulin dependant diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is known to be more common among people who have the disease. (Diabetes research institute).
The pathophysiology of type 1 diabetes is that type 1 is defined as an autoimmune disease, which the body’s own immune system attacks and destroys beta cells in the pancreas which is responsible for production of insulin. The preferred medication for diabetes type 1 is insulin injections, the client with type 1 diabetes may need insulin injections for the long term since the pancreas is unable to create insulin. Type 2 diabetes can be managed with lifestyle changes but if that does not fully work, there are many medications used to treat type 2 diabetes. Metformin is one main medication prescribed for type 2 diabetes, the medication makes the body respond to insulin. Sulfonylureas are other medications which help the body secrete more insulin.
