I grew up with the inbred belief that eating Ugali with my hands made my meal taste better. It sounds crazy, but friends and schoolmates also found it extremely impossible taking their ugali meal with a spoon.
However, as I walked into my uncle’s house that day, my beliefs were destroyed. During supper time, I saw my cousins eat their pieces of Ugali with spoon. How was that even possible! And while I stole glances to witness the broken laws of the Luo culture, they stole glances to look at this strange mshamba (village dweller). It didn’t even take five minutes, I opened up about this unprecedented moment.
“Eat Ugali with your hands. The food will taste better.” They thought I was joking.
