Levy and Jamie L. Macdonald, they explain how Robert N. Butler who was the first Director of the National Institute on Aging defines ageism as only a negative aspect. He states that ageism is the prejudiced attitude by one age group to another, he establishes that younger people just see aging as a process of becoming “powerless” and “useless.” What Sheri R. Levy and Jamie L. Macdonald are trying to accomplish in this article is to give ageism a more positive focus. In 2005 Todd Nelson Editor of Journal of Social Issues made a claim that insinuated that people do not necessarily focus on ageism because of how it is portrayed in the media, and the common belief that getting old can only bring negative aspects into your life (Levy, Macdonald). Another stereotype that is used in the video is one very popular in media that is that older adults are confused and not able to do think by themselves. This is shown when Dunder is leaving and does not know how to find or order a taxi. This and many other examples proves that as a society we see nothing wrong with this type of claims because we are used and exposed to this stereotypes everywhere including TV shows, movies, commercials, etc. But as it is shown in the article negative age-related stereotypes it influence older adults socially, mentally, and can even be the cause of poor health so we should start taking this issues more seriously and stop promoting negativity around
