Assignment 1
Human Comfort within Buildings Report
Student: Peter McCaughey
Teacher: Mrs Keyes
Scenario
A property developer is converting an old railway station into retail and office accommodation. The client is keen to make the working environment for the staff as comfortable as possible. As a consultant, explain how this can be done by addressing the relevant grading criteria.
Introduction
In this assignment I will be looking at how conditions can and are altered to keep workers in the office environment comfortable. I will be relating how the old railway station can be changed to suit office necessities. I will be assessing …show more content…
Both scales are based on the freezing conditions of water, a very common and available liquid. Since water freezes and boils at temperatures that are rather easy to generate, it is the most likely substance on which to base a temperature scale. On the Fahrenheit scale, the freezing point of water is 32 degrees and the boiling point is 212 degrees. The Celsius temperature scale is part of the "metric system" of measurement (SI) and is used throughout the world. The freezing point of water is 0 degrees and the boiling point is 100 degrees on the Celsius temperature scale. Kelvin, like other temperature scales, the freezing and boiling points of water are factors in establishing the scale’s range. There are 100 degrees between the temperate at which water freezes at (273.16 K) and boils (373.16 …show more content…
The decibel scale is a ‘logarithmic’ scale meaning that to move up the scale by a value you don’t add the value, you multiply it to the current decibel rating. Noise level is measured in decibels (dB)

Sound can also be measured using a sound meter. Sound level meters use microphones. The microphone contains a grill on the screen, which protects a moveable cartridge or membrane. When the pressure waves from a sound collide with the membrane they move it back and forth. This causes the membrane to create an electric current. The more the membrane moves, the stronger the current it creates. The sound level meter measures the strength of the current and turns it into a number indicating the volume of sound. The measurement of sound is decibels (dB).
Task 1c: Identify a range of acceptable values for each of the above factors, using the correct units
Acceptable Values for Each Element:
Temperature: In winter when people are wearing heavy layers of clothes 20-24oC is an acceptable temperature for workers to be comfortable
