The child abuse and neglect area are funding programs and research to allow children who are victims receive the proper treatment that they need to get better. The foster care program is funded so that children are able to receive care payments if placed in a foster home. Child welfare is being funded so that families and children involved in welfare can try to have positive outcomes in the end. The tribal programs are very supportive in child welfare by funding them so that they are able to have a positive outcome in the end. The mission of this program is to help children improve their overall well-being and their relationships with their families. The Children’s Bureau is working on being able to help the safety, permanency, and well-being of children and their families by trying to preserve the connections that they have with each other. By being able to achieve their goals, they are involved in a few different projects. From Brofenbrenner’s Bioecological Systems, the exosystem describes children who are not as social and may not participate as much. Berns says, “Studies show that parental employment, income, and setting affect child development outcomes” (2016, p. 24). When a child’s parent is very involved with work, the child may feel as though they have expectations they need to live up to. This can cause the child to not be as appreciated by their parents who work so hard and are hard on their children. Parents who are also so focused on work may not even realize that they are neglecting their child. Neglect is “maltreatment involving abandonment, lack of supervision, improper feeding, lack of adequate medical or dental care, inappropriate dress, uncleanliness, and lack of safety” (Berns, 2016, p. 159). This neglect can result in the child being referred to the Children’s Bureau so that they can look into the program that deals with neglect. The adults may also be treating their children poorly, because “children may become scapegoats for buried negative feelings” (Berns, 2016, p. 163). Something bad could have happened in the parent’s childhood and they could be taking it out on the children.
