Summary
The movie begins in 1940. Carl Fredrickson is a little boy and a dreamer who idolizes the adventurer Charles Muntz. When he meets Ellie, who grew up in a small Midwestern town and also looks up to Muntz, they become close friends. However, Charles Muntz falls into disgrace, because he was accused of forging the skeleton of the monster of Paradise Falls. He travels in his blimp to South America and vows to bring the monster back alive but is never seen again. Eventually, Carl grows up and falls in love with and then marries Ellie. CANNON-BARD THEORY: Walter Cannon and Philip Bard proposed their own theory of emotion, which stated that emotions and bodily changes do not share a cause-and-effect relationship. I.e is not dependent on each other. But rather, they occur simultaneously, following a stimulating event. Thus, the stimulus is perceived at both a physiological and the subjective level. People recognize the emotions and simultaneously undergo physiological responses such as perspiring, trembling and tensing of muscles.
Example: when Ellie is told that she is unable to have children, she feels sad, and buries her face in her hands and cries simultaneously.
II. JAMES-LANGE THEORY: William James and physiologist Carl Lange proposed the idea that challenged common sense beliefs about emotion. This idea, which came to be known as the James-Lange theory, is that people experience emotion because they perceive their bodies’ physiological responses to external events. This theory suggests that different physiological states correspond to different experiences of emotion.
