The Pacific War was fought almost entirely between Japan and the United States, The Allies owe this victory to America. The Idea that the Second World War was a European War is a common misconception. Although the Nazi Force in Germany led a large portion of the War, the Japanese advancements in Asia were just as much a threat. Japan was a growing superpower while “the U.S. army was placed eighteenth in a 1940 ranking.”(Thompson) Yet America was able to defeat the Japanese throughout the War, thus proving their importance to the Allies. The Battle at Iowa Jima was the “bloodiest battle in marine corps history.”(Marston) The island is set directly between the American bases in the Marianas and the American targets in Japan. Taking the island would be the last step towards taking Tokyo. The Battle took almost 2 months of fire raiding from the American air force to eradicate the enemy from their bunkers. During this brutal bombardment, only 200 of the over 20 000 Japanese troops on the island survived. With tragedy also came ceremony as the victory guaranteed that an end was in sight for the greatest naval war in history.
