The main techniques used in the book include transfer, fear, and bandwagon. The technique transfer was used a lot, for instance on page 82 when the animals windmill was destroyed in a storm Napoleon blames the loss on another pig he, didn’t like named Snowball to try and get the other animals to hate him. Again on page 88 the pigs began to spread rumors that Snowball was sneaking on to the farm at night and that every time something went wrong it was his fault, everything from broken eggs to broken windows. The second technique I found was fear. For example, in the beginning (page 30) when the animals come together for a meeting with Old Major, he tells the animals that most of them will be dead within the year and even the rest will be killed by humans eventually. Later in the book (page 65) Napoleon uses fear when talking about the windmill, he says that the animals needed to increase the amount of food they produce and not waste the time on the windmill or else they would all starve to death. Finally the bandwagon technique was also used throughout the book. For instance on page 63 the sheep bleating “4 legs good 2 legs bad”, even though they didn’t completely understand any of the laws they still want to agree with everyone. Another example would be on page 91 when Boxer tries to defend Snowball and say how he fought bravely at the Battle of the
