A duty is an action that is used in a form of give and take. The duty approach has a focus towards the reasoning behind different actions and questioning right and wrong behaviors. Its first formulation is, “Act only according to that maxim by which you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.” This first formulation simply acknowledges that you should only act by rules that would be widely accepted and followed. The second formulation is, “So act to treat humanity, whether in your own person or in that of any other, in every case as an end and never merely as a means.” This second formulation dives into the idea that people should be treated right and should not be used as worthless pawns to help reach an end. The third and final formulation is, “Every rational being is able to regard oneself as a maker of universal law.” This third formulation points to the idea that every individual should have the ability to question and contribute to law rather than fully accept unreasonable
