Canada is a northern country that has many livable cities. One of these cities is Vancouver which is located in British Columbia [49.2505° N, 123.1119° W] (“Vancouver Map” par.1). It is a beautiful water-level city in the lower mainland region. Vancouver has a powerful economy, it is one of the main industrial centres of Canada (“Vancouver Map” par. 2). Vancouver is an environmentally friendly city and has a diverse population. This report addresses the environmental, economic and social conditions of Vancouver to determine the livability of the city.

In 2011, the population was 603, 502 people (“Population” par.4). The majority of the people are 15-64 years of age, approximately 74.6% of the population (“Focus” par.5). The rest counts for seniors, children and infants. This city is quite diverse. Approximately 50% of residents speak a first language other than english (“Living” par. 3). The transit system within this city is called TransLink. The service totals around 1800 square km. It includes buses, the SkyTrain, Seabus, West Coast Express (train service), and ferries (“Transit” pars. 1-7). Moreover, Vancouver wants to combine the nature and urban lifestyles. “Vancouverism is an internationally known term that describes a new kind of city living” (“Urban” par.1). Some plans taking place are the Chinatown revitalization; which keeps the community’s heritage while adding a modern vibe and the Olympic Village; which creates housing areas from the athlete's residences (“Major” pars. 2,14). Furthermore, Vancouver has two largely known universities; University of British Columbia (UBC) and Simon Fraser University. UBC was ranked 2nd from Canadian universities while Simon Fraser was ranked 10th by Newsweek (“Living” par.5). Vancouver’s housing prices have increased through the years.
