Semantics, on the other hand, is the study of what phrases mean, and how words communicate the meaning we intend to get across in our communication. This can be seen when for example Americans use subconscious words or slang such as “let’s get our food in the drive-thru?” or “I went to a Redbox and got the movie that we have been wanting to watch!” People of different culture and language backgrounds may understand the words, but find it difficult to correlate them as this might be their first time hearing the word or phrase. The third component of linguistics is the syntactics which ties into our previous semantics. Syntactics however, is the arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences in a language. Syntactics is a crucial part of our language and communication -especially when a new language is involved, as learning a new language associates itself with not only learning new words and their meaning but also the particular rules that govern the language. Communication style meaning the combination of verbal and nonverbal elements. This often refers to the way that we as people use the language, while it also helps listeners understand how to interpret verbal messages. In our college classes, for example, certain professors prefer to teach their classes in certain ways in which they might think is best for the students so that they are able to grab hold of and understand the information being given to them. There are actually three distinct dimensions of communication style: high-/low-context, direct/indirect, and elaborated/understated. The one I will be focusing on is the direct vs indirect communication style. In cultures with direct communication style (which tend to correlate with task-oriented cultures), such as U.S. Americans, Australians, Germans, and Anglo Canadians, both literal truthfulness, as well as efficiency in communication, are highly valued and to some extent are a higher priority than personal or political sensitivities, especially in a business setting. In indirect cultures, on the other hand (Japanese, Chinese, Indians, Saudi Arabians, for example), directly communicating negative information is seen as impolite and crude, even in a business setting. We can definitely see the difference between the two especially when looking back at our history and what the causes are of the effects
