The Vietnam War or The Second Indochina War was a protracted conflict that pitted the communist government of North Vietnam along with the Viet Cong, against the government of South Vietnam and its principal ally, the United States (Spector, 2016). At the heart of the conflict was the desire of North Vietnam, which had defeated the French colonial administration of Vietnam in 1954, to unify the entire country under a single communist regime modeled after those of the Soviet Union and China (Vietnam War History, 2009). This led to a prolonged conflict which culminated On 30 April 1975. North Vietnamese Army troops entered the city of Saigon and quickly overcame all resistance. A tank from the 324th Division crashed through the gates of the Independence Palace. At 11:30 am the Viet Cong flag was raised above the palace.
