In Du Bois’s book, the idea of double-consciousness appeals to the black perspective. He says, “...the journey at least gave leisure for reflection and self-examination… with dawning self-consciousness, self-realization, and self-respect.” In my opinion, the majority of the black community lacks these morals to an extent. The self-realization is lost where exerting the blame to White America or the Republicans and they lack the support needed in order to bring themselves out of poverty and to success. They don’t have self-respect for each other as to blacks are killing each other disproportionately or feel that they can do better and have a luxurious lifestyle. Self-consciousness is lacking where the group makes a choice of what everyone does or says and not what the individual wants.
