In the Beginning of the book, it is Wang Lung’s wedding day. Wang Lung is to be married to O-Lan. In the first year of their marriage, they have their first son and he brings a good year of crops. The next year O-Lan has once again another boy which again brings the family a prosperous year of harvest. A famine sweeps through the majority of northern China because of the shortage of water. Wang Lung and his family try to endure the hardships of the famine, but are forced to travel south to try to survive. In the south Wang Lung tries to survive with the many challenges in the south. Some of the challenges that Wang Lung faces are finding food, trying to work, and providing for his family. Wang Lung and his family become extremely desperate for food that Wang Lung’s second son is willing to steal meat from a butcher so that the family may survive. Soon after Wang Lung’s second son stole meat Wang Lung changes from a hard working person to salavageing the rich’s houses for money.In this part of the novel Wang Lung and his family run into a obstacle in the road likes in parts our lives. In our lives, we may suffer from financial issues or even forced to move to a different place like Wang Lung
