Due to these killings the Tutsi president Michel Micombero responded to this by declaring martial law and setting the genocide of the Hutus in place. This first wave of this ended up in wiping all of the educated Hutus (according to my source: by June nearly 45 percent of teachers were reported missing and students at technical schools were reported as well) and by the time this was over in May nearly 5 percent of the Hutu population had been slaughtered (source estimates range from 100000 up to 300000 Hutus). By 1993 the presidential office was won by the Hutus with Melchior Ndadye therefore forming the first government since independence from Belgium in 1962 with elections that had been accepted/allowed by the Ruling Tutsis but shortly after that Ndadye was assassinated.
