Though A Streetcar Named Desire is primarily about Blanche DuBois and her decline into hysteria, Stella Dubois remains a key player in the story; she is a connector of sorts, prompting events to take place. She is Blanche’s sister and Stanley’s wife, connecting them together, for without her they would have never met. Stella is having the baby and it is Stella who eventually sends Blanche away. Stella may not be the prominent character throughout the play, however she is still a key player in how events unfold. Nothing is known of what happens to Stella after the play ends, however, in all likelihood, Stella stays with Stanley, raises his children in near poverty, and is beaten by her husband, whom she loves, for the rest of her life. …show more content…
Stella is married and pregnant in the late 1930’s or early 1940’s. There was a social stigma that sex made a woman “dirty” and having a child out of wedlock was especially looked down on. Stella married Stanley because she was in love with him but as she states to Blanche: “ But of course there were things to adjust myself to later on.( Scene 1)” Now that she is in the marriage, it’s pretty obvious Stanley doesn’t love her and he beats her when he’s drunk and smashes their belongings- first the radio and then a dinner plate and glass tumbler. She is stuck in her marriage because of the pregnancy and she tells Blanche that she hates it when he hits her in front of people, however, she is quite complacent in the marriage,
