Everything begins with a thought, each new invention or the direction a society embraces begins with someone who is willing to imagine something different. For years English, Math, Science, and Social Studies have been believed to be the basic building blocks of learning and the primary subjects based in our educational system. Students who are being taught art and music are encouraged and learning to create something from nothing. They are being challenged with a blank canvas or a lump of clay and to create. They are asked to work together and communicate ideas as well as listen and process other’s thoughts. In music they are required to listen and follow along as a group to rhythms. This type of conditioning empowers young minds to see things differently, encourages them to be confident in themselves and create something out of nothing. It also helps them to stick with a problem when the answers are not clearly defined and solve it creatively. An article written in US News supported how art and music classes have long lasting benefits towards education; “Concentration, strong recall skills, evolved communication skills, and being a good team player are just a few of the benefits research shows music, foreign language and physical education have on a developing mind” (Boyd). (8) Music helps in the development of multiple skill sets simultaneously. Having to do things simultaneously is a very important skill that young students will bring as they development in more formal ways. It has long been understood that putting information to music and incorporating a tune, will speed up and help a person remember the facts.
