A crucible is a severe test.. It could also mean a place or situation in which different components interact to form something new . It's also container that holds hot metal. In the crucible written by Arthur Miller each character is faced with test. The test that each of them have is honesty and how they are.…
During the play, people are put to death for having contact with the devil; people have enjoyed watching their friends be put to death, but by the end of the play nobody is excited to see John Proctor, Goody Nurse, and Martha Corey put to death. A crucible can be defined in two different ways, a severe test or trial, or a vessel that can withstand intense heat and is used for melting substances. A character that shows the significance of the symbol “crucible” is John Proctor, who endured severe tests or trials throughout the entire play. Also, another character that shows the symbolic significance of the title is Reverend Parris, who symbolizes the other meaning of the word “crucible”. John Proctor experiences several tests or trials throughout the play, but one of the trials he faces during the play…
A main character, or protagonist, has been defined as having the most importance to the storyline and also does the most to support it. I think that Elizabeth Proctor in the Crucible is a protagonist. Elizabeth Proctor is a mother of two and husband to John Proctor. She is shown as being a proud, stubborn woman with a vindictive streak - this is shown in her reaction to the affair between her husband and their previous house servant, Abigail. She refuses to forgive John, despite his efforts and has trouble letting go of her anger.…
The first definition of crucible is a pot that can withstand a great amount of heat. Elizabeth accurately portrays this example because she withstood a great amount of trouble within the play. Trouble first finds Elizabeth when her husband has an affair…
“The right way is not always the popular and easy way. Standing for right when it is unpopular is a true test of moral character.” Margaret Smith, an American politician, relates to what people had to go through on a daily basis during the Salem witch trials. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, characters are confronted with a decision to stand for what is right or discredit others for their own good.…
The acts that happened in 1692 and1693 in colonial Massachusetts lead to many tragedies. Although we weren’t there to witness or hear the rumors about Salem. In 1952 author Arthur Miller wrote the play The Crucible. We have the story of what happened in Salem. Reverend Hale, one of the main characters, he is the spiritual doctor of Salem.…
In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the people of Salem are accusing others of witchcraft. During the play several people were realizing that what was happening was not right, some did speak out but many did nothing to try and stop it. There are also many times in the real world this has occurred. An example of a person doing what is right when others wouldn't is when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat for a white man.…
The Crucible is a play written by Arthur Miller about the factual events that took place in Salem Massachusetts in 1692. The Crucible is again about factual events and was written to inform people on the tragic events that happened 300 years ago. The play by Miller shows the true reason why the trials started and why they continued. The Crucible also provides insight into the cold war time period and things that people did in fear of Soviet spies and how similar it was to a “Witch Hunt”. The Crucible is mainly about how mass hysteria can cause small harmless events to get out of hand quickly even to the point of murder.…
Significance of Title: Crucible is a word with multiple definitions. The word crucible can refer to a metal container used to heat metals and chemicals to extremely high temperatures or a severe test or trial. Both of these definitions can be used to represent the events that took place throughout the play. When a chemical is heated in a crucible, the atoms of the chemical begin to move around at an increasing speed as the temperature increases. It could be said that these atoms move more “frantically”, as they are exposed to more and more heat.…
Since The Crucible is based off of historical events, there are many stories as to how it happened. A town named LeRoy experienced similar things that Salem has. There were girls in both towns that were affected , once it was brought to people's attention the problems got bigger. When you lie about something and keep the lie going, it starts to become real and you will start to believe your lie. In both cases the whole town was affected, people were angry and they wanted to put an end to the problems.…
The word “crucible” has multiple definitions, two of which can relate to the play in different ways. One definition of a crucible is a container in which substances can be exposed to extremely high temperatures. This definition could apply to the play metaphorically, relating to the people of Salem suddenly being exposed to the mass hysteria of multiple people being convicted of witchcraft. Crucible can also mean a severe test or trial. This definition relates more literally because in the play there were trials being held for the people that were…
What makes a character a protagonist? Is it the length of time a reader spends with him or her? Or is it a character’s tendency for doing good? In correct context, the definition of a protagonist includes, “A leading character advocating for a particular cause or belief.” Along with this, a protagonist furthers the plot and allows for continuous movement within the story.…
The Crucible is a suspenseful, filled with evil, and naive characters play written by Arthur Miller. The play takes place in Salem, Massachusetts during the late 1600’s based on the Salem…
Prior to discussion of the values of Puritan roots and significance of the crucible which the play adopted as its title, the events that took place in Salem seemed to be a mass hysteria over a “trend” fear of sorts. The title of the play, The Crucible, was a clever choice Miller made during a conversation with his scientist friend who was experimenting with a crucible, a heating process that purifies chemicals. Much like the characters of the play, any substance that goes into the pot comes out drastically changed. As proven in the presentations, the title is a metaphor that epitomizes the events and characters in more than one way as it can also be defined as testing and trialing.…
The Crucible The Crucible is a play written in 1952 by Arthur Miller. This book relates to what we have studied this semester because it is centered around the Salem Witchcraft Trials that occurred in Massachusetts in 1692. My junior year of high school, we were required to read both the play and the movie and it is something that I will never forget. The scene that always come to my mind when I think of The Crucible is when the opening scene where Tituba and some of the girls are practicing witchcraft around a fire late at night in the middle of the woods. I also think of the end scene in which 19 people were hanged.…
