Esperanza is a good role model and shows how difficult it is for a minority, Chicana women to find her value in a patriotically racist world. Salt to the earth is a movie that enlightens, empowers, and credits the feminist ongoing struggle, and shows a Chicanas fight not only to the opposite gender, but to her own culture.
In the beginning of The Salt to The Earth, Esperanza is Chicana women married to a mineworker, and was expecting a child at that moment. Esperanza's life was just like any other life for Chicanas during the civil rights movement era. Esperanza speaks bitterly, and wishes her child not to be born because of the world she lives in. Again, this is a good demonstration of what Chicana women had to go through during what seemed to be a man's fight. I think the creator of this story did this because society still does not see what Chicana women had to go through to maintain their spot in society today, although it may not be what women desire. When the civil rights movement are mentioned one may think of MLK or Cesar Chavez, but people don’t know who Dolores Huerta or Cherrie Moraga is. This movie is inspirational not only to women but to feminist men who realize women's struggle. Being a mother is one of the hardest jobs for women because they need to protect their children, but also because they oversee educating the next generations to be better. Men who watch this movie may be enlightened of women's struggles. Men might begin to understand how hard it is for women to fight against their own loved ones wishes and may begin to realize that women can do much more than just be mothers. Women need to overcome, because equality is what we all speak of as a society, so why should we have something other than
