p. 384-386 According to the textbook, “What the Research Tell Us” states that the language have several characteristics. Children’s language is different from ours, adults’ language. Children have different ways of knowledge and they seem to lack of awareness. Second, language is not learned by simply imitating adult’s language. They also try to come to terms with language by themselves. Third, the more experience children have, the more they build or develop their vocabulary skills and language. Fourth, children’s language experiences are based on their first five years. It is important that we assist them with words and communicative skills. Fifth, language development is a process of experience and maturation. Teachers must be aware of children’s cultural language skills, so that they would be able to help and to assist children in their speech. Moreover, there are six stages of language development. The five stages of early literacy development are awareness and exploration, experimenting with reading and writing, transitional reading and writing, conventional reading and writing. Through these stages, teachers can help children to enhance children’s literacy skills. Teachers can read them books, stories, poems, songs. They can also help children rehearse by singing, re-saying and reading along. Teachers observe as children learn to recognize words and know the text as they read.
