I believe that Jean Piaget was one of the most influential individuals in the history of Psychology. Piaget developed the cognitive development theory, and this theory is the theory stating that someone’s childhood plays an enormous role in how their brain develops. I believe that Piaget was the most influential individual because this theory has been proven in many cases.
While reading through the different theories and fell upon the cognitive development theory, I immediately thought of the story of Genie, the feral child. To make a long story short, Genie was held captive by her father in the basement from the time she was an infant to 13 years old. Genie was tied to a potty chair, beaten when she made noise, and kept in complete darkness until she was 13. Describing the behavior of people helps to explain how that person acts, and lets us know if their actions are normal or abnormal. Explaining someone’s behavior is essentially what psychology is. As a psychologist, it is your job to examine the way someone acts and explain why they are the way they are. Predicting behavior is key to understanding behavior. With predicting behavior, you can take what you know about someone, and predict what might happen in their future. For instance, if you know someone is a known alcoholic and they struggle with being around alcohol, you can predict to a pretty good certainty that if they were to attend an event with alcohol freely available, they would most likely partake in it. Finally, the goal of controlling or changing behavior is to take what you know about someone, and make a change in their life to help better them. (Cherry K, 2016, June
