Ferdinand Foch, a French General and Supreme Commander of the Allied forces during World War 1, said "This [The Treaty of Versailles] is not a peace. It is an armistice for twenty years". World War 1 was caused by the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, the future emperor of Austria-Hungary. Serbia financed the assassination, which lead to Austria-Hungary declaring war on Serbia. Each country's allies declared war on each other eventually leading to a global conflict. The Great War involved 32, countries killing over 8 million soldiers. The allies wanted Germany so weak so that they never could start a war again, so they limited their weaponry. France wanted Germany to only have 100,000 soldiers. England and France took away Germany’s air force. They also took away 6 battle ships and all their submarines, France also took away Germany’s tanks. The allies made Germany gives up many their resources. Not to mention the country lost resources like coal, oil, and people. Germany also had to give 70,000 kilometers of their land. The country had to pay significant money to rebuild parts of France and England. Germany gave up parts of Germany because the allies occupied it. Hyperinflation also made the country's money worthless. The German economy was devastated.
