Sociologists find it important to differentiate between sex and gender because recognizing one’s identity is highly personal and sociologist consider the fact that individuals should always have the full range of freedom to decide their identities, it can, however, prove practical to systematically distinguish between sex and gender by further providing specific education and public discussion in hopes of producing more humane public policies. Furthermore, by expanding the knowledge in differentiating between sex and gender, sociologists hope to reduce discrimination and defuse misconceptions, stereotypes, and imposed social roles. How does gender stratification harm both men and women?
Gender stratification concerns both men and women; furthermore, it has a strong impact on their daily lives. An issue that has been long looked upon, solely as a woman’s fight for equal rights, in reality is just as much of a man’s issue as a women’s issue. Men face lower life expectancy, poor health, lower education levels, and stern gender norms, where woman face discrimination, sexual harassment, unequal pay, reduced success and a decrease in higher positions within the workplace. While men and women alike try to fall within the social norms put on them by the world they are missing out on opportunities.
