Marquis’s reply to the Potentiality Objection is that he doesn’t claim that the foetus has the potential to be a person but rather that it has the potential to be in a similar kind of state as a person in future. (Schmid, 2017) Another prominent objection to his FLO argument is the Contraception Objection this objection however tries to disprove his FLO argument by trying to show that it’s too absurd as it suggests that contraception might be the same as abortion which according to him is murder since he believes abortion and murder are the same and this objection says that Marquis’s FLO argument insinuates that contraception is a method of abortion and therefore murder. The argument for the Contraception Objection shows how since Marquis says a foetus has potential for a future like us then it’s also possible for sperm and egg cells to have a future like ours and that contraception …show more content…
Even though Marquis’ argument states that abortion is wrong because it is the same as murder it does make exceptions for certain circumstances such as if the foetus won’t have a pleasant future like ours due to severe disability that will inhibit it from having a beneficial and fruitful future like ours. (BBC, 2014) The abortion argument however is a morally based argument and to some a religious argument but I believe it’s a personal choice that only woman are entitled to make. But with regards to abortion being illegal theoretically it seems like the moral thing to make it illegal but realistically its not because with over 800 million of the world population living in abject poverty it’s clear that not everyone who falls pregnant can be able to guarantee their child a decent future in our current world system meaning in this planet most ‘potential persons’ futures are prone to suffering. So I believe sometimes abortion actually helps prevents some foetuses from living horrible lives and I don’t just base this on socio-economic reasons but life itself in general is unpredictable and tragedy can strike at any moment so I believe it is better to not live and not experience anything at all than live a harsh life which is full of terrible experiences. But back to the legality of this part of the topic I believe making abortion illegal would hinder the political and economic empowerment of
