Three strong themes Sachar has used to connect the different time periods together were relationships, authority and survival. The relationships during holes are all about friendship, love or authority; they play an important role in connecting the different time periods. Authority plays the role of standards, what is to be expected, all time periods have one or more authoritative figure. The theme of authority was carried out in a different way to in Green Lake and Camp Green Lake as rules were clearly set and the people had rankings in racial and wealthy ways. The person of Authority in Green Lake was the sheriff who works together with the higher-ranking families to set the laws and boundaries. As soon as these laws are broken, the offender is punished with death. However in Camp Green Lake the authoritative order was The Warden followed by Mr Sir then the councillors and then the campers. Authority throughout holes is about who has the most power, wealth and wisdom.
