Parents and professionals also have guidelines which they must follow to ensure the health and welfare of the child is kept paramount, this ensures that children are treated correctly and are not put in danger and harm. Another positive of the Children act is it ensures that the local authority work in partnership with the child’s parents. This is important as then both the services and parents are aware of anything that is happening in the child’s life, it is important that they communicate with each other in order to meet the child’s needs and protect the child. When making decisions they should consult each other as they need to make sure the child’s health and safety is the main focus when making a decision. An example of this is the Victoria Climbié case. Victoria Climbié died with 128 injuries on her body after suffering abuse from her aunt and boyfriend. She had come into contact with health professionals, police, nurses and social workers on several occasions however the abuse she was suffering was not discovered until after her death. During this case the child protection authorities had not completed their job properly as they had cancelled home visits and didn’t investigate her case further. If professionals has worked together on this case and child protection had investigated further Victoria’s death could have been prevented. Hospitals, police and social services could have worked collaboratively together and would have seen her injuries were not self-inflicted and could have provided her a better home life. After Victoria Climbié death an inquiry was held by Lord Laming. This enquiry found that services were not working together and sharing information and this was having an impact on the children. A number of recommendations were made which were acted on and revised the Children Act 2004. There is now an improved focus on ensuring that services work together and protect children from any harm.
