They have risked their lives to protect their friends and families. When asked the importance of veterans, I cannot help but think, “Do veterans feel that they are important?” I first thought of my grandfather, a veteran of the Vietnam War and one of the kindest people on this planet, when I was given this topic. I wondered if he felt that he was important, but I didn’t have to wonder if he felt that other veterans were important. Any time he sees another soldier, it does not matter where we are, he will walk up and thank them for their service. He does this because he understands their importance and what it feels like to be unappreciated. When he returned from Vietnam, he was spit on and had things, such as glass bottles, thrown at him. Despite the things he and his unit did, like saving forty men from a POW camp, people still hated him. He makes sure that the soldiers nowadays know that they are appreciated and are important.
