In this book Liesel steals a total of six books, every book having something behind it. One of the books Liesel stole was found by Liesel lying in the snow at her brother’s funeral which made it more important. This was aswell the first book Liesel was taught to read. Stealing one book made her crave to steal more. The next book stolen was The Shoulder Shrug found deep in a part of the pile of the book burning on Hitler’s birthday. The book was not yet burnt. Anger pushed her to steal this book. The next book is called The Dream Carrier stolen from Ilsa Hermann’s library. There are various books stolen from Ilsa Hermann also including A Song in the Dark, The Whistler, which was read in the bomb shelter , and The Last Human Stranger. Both these books illustrate how powerful Liesel and Max’s friendship is. In The Standover Man Max is illustrating his life in different words and things. It talks about how Max’s first standover man was his own father who vanished. There were always people standing over him and being better than him. He soon discovers that the best standover “man” is a girl that didn’t stand over him, but stand with him. In his second book The Word Shaker talks about the friendship of Max and Liesel and how words help people rise to power. Words can be powerful for both positive and negative things and people.
