Critical Analysis Paper #1 Question #1: Social Work and Systems Theory Social Work as a concept and a career is simple, yet difficult to define. Social work has grown and developed from the seed that is envelops social issues in our society. As Robbins, Chatterjee, and Canda state in Contemporary Human Behavior Theory (2012), defined situations within society have dictated the need for social work and advocates to speak on behalf of those who are unable to speak for themselves. From the inception of its career, social work has been associated with helping those in need, whether that be at a micro-level with individual therapy and case management, or a macro level with policy development and large scale advocacy efforts.…
“Public spaces are part of the image of the city, hence their use to (re)present and sell the city. Thus, public (and sometimes private) authorities place great importance on creating, revitalizing, revamping and highlighting these spaces.” (Bélanger, 2012) These events are some of the ways that gentrification helped this area, since it allowed new authorities to use reuse older public spaces to bring together its residents and…
Zukin’s article delves upon how gentrification and reubranization influence the authenticity of an urban place. Her article relates to my neighborhood because in the same retrospect as Harlem, Bensonhurst has also undergone an extensive transformation and changes due to the new residents and commercial buildings. Merry’s “Urban Danger: Life in a Neighborhood of Strangers” explores the urban danger correlated with living in a neighborhood with “strangers.” Her article concentrates on a…
In many tenements, only the rooms on the street got any light, and the interior rooms had no ventilation. By 1900, some 2.3 million people, a full two-thirds of New York City’s population, were living in tenement housing (Tenements, 2015) It wasn’t until the middle of the 19th century that people started to move from the center of the cities. The upper class built townhouses along the main streets and within walking distance of the docks, warehouses, offices and shops, which provided services and entertainment. The middle class lived farther from the center and the poor lived in the suburbs.…

Passing and Privilege African Americans, in earlier history have passed for the more dominant “white” race. This avertible process in the United Sates happened when certain African American outward appearances gave no visible indication that he or she was of the “black” race and, therefore was able to pass as white in order to prevent the stigma linked with the discrimination that African Americans endured during this earlier time period. This was a dilemma that was filled with complexity because it forced these individuals to only be able to claim one of their racial identities and not the other, leaving them with a feeling of isolation and levels of confusion. People, who use what is known as Passing did so in order to be able to live a more privilege or less complicated way of life.…
George Perec’s The Street encourages the reader to overanalyze their neighbourhood so much that it becomes alien to them. Perec wants the reader to think about their neighbourhood the planning, structure and implied rules that are expressed and present in the construction of street, a house, or a neighbourhood. Perec urges the reader to really look, not just look at the extraordinary things in their neighbourhood but the seemingly benign and boring elements of a neighbourhood that one passes off or ignores day to day. He even urges the readers to make a list of the things they see and hear in their community.…
Overrepresentation of Indigenous Children in Child Welfare Oppression is the use of power to ostracize, silence or otherwise degrade one social group or category, often in order to further empower the oppressor. Then what is anti-oppression? Anti-oppression (AOP) is a network that seeks to recognize the oppressions that exist in our society and make gains to minimize and eliminate its affects, moving towards equalizing the power imbalance in our communities. Healy (2014) states “anti-oppressive practice is a critical social work approach that draws on critical social science theories and is informed by humanistic and social justice values, taking account of the experiences and views of oppressed people” (pg. 192).…
Boundaries Within social work, professionalism is key in earning the respect of your clients and forming a firm foundation of the context of your relationship. These boundaries reflect upon what not only your clients expect from you as a case worker, but how they as the clients should treat you. Moreover, if you do not exemplify these ideals then clients have the ability to take advantage of you.…
In her explanation, although public space and private space are completely different, the two spatial types still relate to each other with a level of continuity. Indeed, the Small house looks so over-transparent that people might think it has lost the function of being a residential. In fact, the spatial settlement of the residential still works functionally. Private spaces like bathroom and bedroom are hidden at corner and underground covered by solid cladding. Moreover, the basement floor is not completely covered by the ground.…

Flexner shows us a brief picture of how a profession would be, where he brings in a comparison between a professional and an amateur; he portrays the professional as someone whose entire time is devoted to an activity and the latter who is transiently and provisionally so engaged.…

Understanding of the social work profession To many, the primary mission of the profession of social work is enhancing the needs of those that are considered vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty. However, my understanding of the social work profession is helping someone to make positive changes in his or her life that result in a better quality of life. This is also true when promoting the wellbeing of the community in a social context.…
