The principle of “Zero Reject” was established to ensure that all students, ages 3-21 years old, are found and provided the services needed to have an appropriate education. It is the job of the educational workers to locate, identify, and serve these students. They must work diligently to help all students that they suspect need additional services. However, each student suspected must meet two criteria to have eligibility. First, they must be determined to have a disability that is covered under IDEA. Second, they must need special education and related services because of their disability.
2. Protection in Evaluation
Protection in evaluation refers to testing each student that is suspected of needing special education services and allowing the student certain protections through that process. The student must be tested in a non-discriminatory way before receiving services. They must be tested in their native language and they must be allowed the use of technical sound instruments. The student must also be tested in all areas that are relevant to their disability. The results of the testing must be carefully examined and obtained from various sources.
