This is because it is the only to help establish certain facts in the psychological world. An example is that one of Zimbardo's Stanford Prison experiment on the power of social roles. He had to expose the participants in the given conditions so that he would know if their personality would change according to the treatment they got from the guards.
Arguments Against
Most researchers feel that the controversial research studies are unethical. They expose the participants in conditions that are not appropriate. An example is the research done by John Watson who wanted to test hoe fear was innate or a conditioned response. He used a nine months’ baby to see how he would react when different things were exposed to him. An example of things is a rat, a monkey and other things for two months without any sort of conditioning. The child was discharged before the he would be stabilized and later died at age 6. This is a harmful way of doing experiments since the participants do not even have a choice to make and they are exposed in extreme conditions which later affect them in future. The participants are not compensated
