Windows Deployment Services.
Software platform and technology that allows you to preform automated network-based installations based on a network-based boot and operating system, or a local device on the network.

Image File
Snapshot of a computer's hard drive taken at a particular moment in time. Contains OS, updates, applications and configuration changes.
PXE
Preboot Execution Environment
Allows for booting from the network. WDS requires this, so as to allow clients to connect to a network resource for boot instructions and image.
Windows PE
Windows Preinstallation Environment
A WDS client boots via PXE, connects to the WDS. WDS instructs client to boot, and sends the image for, Windows PE.
This is a limited version of the OS, with enough functionality to load and install the a *actual* desire image from the network.
