LAN is generally confined to a limited geographicalarea such as a building oran office;connects in small space.
WAN covers a large geographical area; connects over broad space. Most WANs are made up of severalconnected LANs.
Interfaces
- A boundary across which twoindependent systems meet and act on or communicate with each other.
1. user interface - thekeyboard, mouse, menus of a computer system. The user interface allows the userto communicate with the operating system.
2. software interface - thelanguages and codes that the applications use to communicate with each otherand with the hardware.
3. hardware interface - thewires, plugs and sockets that hardware devices use to communicate with each other
Graphical User Interface- User interacts with menus and visual images such as buttons andother graphical objects to issue commands.Allows keyboard, point, click, and drag .

Consists of master programs - RAMManage basic operations Decides what resources will be used and for how longMemoryFlow Control -BIOS (input/output)File Management -Windows XP -Mac OS -Vista -Free Open Source Software(FOSS) - Linux
Types of Networks:
1. Local Area Network (LAN) – a network that spans a smallarea such as a building or an office.
Software applications and otherresources are stored on a file server.
Print servers enable multiple users to share the sameprinter.
2. Wide Area Network (WAN) – a network that spans a widegeographical area; there are several types of WANS:
a. Metropolitan area network(MAN)
b. Public access network (PAN)
c. Value added network (VAN)
d. Virtual private network (VPN)
Internet - is a large network made up of many smaller networks. EX. one city mayconnect to other cities and that creates a region. That region might connect toanother region; for example, the western United States may connect to theMidwestern portion of the United States.
Ethernet - sends internet data from one node to another in packets.
Intranet - Allows companies to supplyInternet services over a LAN. It is a closed internet, inside the company. EX. LOLA
Extranet - Allowscompanies to directly communicate with each other’s networks EX. A book publisher gives access to her students to her book that is on the Internet.
