Describe water as a dipolar molecule.
the hydrogen and oxygen atoms share electrons, and so the oxygen end is slightly negative and the hydrogen atoms are slightly positive.
Why does water have a high specific heat capacity?
hydrogen bonds=more energy to separate molecules. Certain amount of energy to heat a given amount of water. Organism buffer for sudden temperature changes.
What is the latent heat of vaporisation of water?
hydrogen bonding=a lot of energy to evaporate 1g of water
sweat=effective means of cooling (body heat)
What is the cohesion of water?
the tendency of water molecules to stick together.
Allows water to be pulled up a tube, such as in the xylem vessel of a plant
What is the surface tension of water?
where water molecules meet air, the molecules are pulled back into the body of water.
This makes the surface strong enough to support small organisms.
Why is water important to living organisms?
Metabolism: break down complex molecules (hydrolysis)/chemical reactions take place/major raw material in photosynthesis.
Solvent: Dissolves various materials (CO2, O2, urea, animo acids, ATP, enzymes)
What are the other important features of water?
Becomes sweat on the skin which evaporates.
Not easily compressed (support)
Transparent=aquatic plants can photosynthesize.
