responsiveness through local policies toward the overall community rather than narrow interests. Even though urban elections have low turnout, they may have solutions to revitalize American democratic governance at the local, state and federal level. Over a century ago, the push for political, institutional, and electoral reforms was seen as a way to remove rigged elections, party dominance over local politics, and political corruption (Rakove, 2007). These democratic reforms transitioned city government from political machines to a more open democratic system, accountable and responsive to voters; however, reforms increased the involvement of interest groups in local governance (Bridge, 1997; Trounstine, 2008). A mechanism that seeks to decrease the influence of interest group politics in local government is public campaign funding by decreasing the reliance of fundraising in elections. Therefore, does the presence of publicly funded campaigns in city elections shift city responsiveness to the electorate through policy outcomes? If it does, then campaign finance reforms could help reinvigorate democratic governance by reorienting the process to the community at large and away from resource-rich interests. In contemporary America politics, there is a growing dissatisfaction with government and concern of money in politics, which deters voter engagement leading to fewer policies directed toward their needs. This is a symptom at the national, state, and local level.…

Local knowledge is important for the world food security. The literature on Buddhist self-reliance and the philosophy of sufficiency economy to date has been increasingly progressed; however, there is a limitation of focus on capacity building of local small-householder farmers to achieve sustainable…

120,000 troubled families are ‘turned around’ by the end of this Parliament”, in 2015 (Department for Communities and Local Government, 2012, p.1). One of the reasons for the Troubled Families programme being introduced, is the significant cost of “approximately £9 billion a year” with the “vast majority spent on reacting to their problems” instead of being spent on “providing lasting results and changing lives”. As of August 2014, the programme had “turned around” the lives of nearly 70,000…

How could central government addressed the problem of wealth sharing, there…

The phenomenon of the modern supermarket is a product of the evolution of the needs of individuals. It represents a shift away from small scale subsistence; whereby, the food needs of oneself and one’s family were met, predominantly, through self-production, and what could not be produced/made was then purchased from a local supplier. 1 Unfortunately, the hectic pace of contemporary life, and the realities of two world wars reshaped the food industry into its present incarnation, which now…
