Although Beethoven began to notice problems with his hearing in the late 1790s, it is in 1801 that his struggle with deafness began in earnest. He consulted numerous physicians and tried many devices to improve his hearing. None of his treatments proved successful, and the composer was profoundly deaf by 1815, yet, Beethoven created many of his greatest works during this period of intense physical and emotional struggle. These works include Symphonies 3-8, his only opera, Fidelio, as well as many of his best-loved piano sonatas, including the Waldstein, Op. 53. |
