Phrase	Group of words missing a subject or a verb or both
Clause	Group of words that always has both a subject and a verb
Independent Clause	S+V+complete thought (The dog ate my shoes)
Subordinate Clause	S+V+incomplete thought
Adjective Subordinate Clause	Subordinate clause that modifies the Noun/Pronoun in the independent clause. Begins with relative pronouns. (Who, whom, whose, which, that) Rarely when and where
Adverb Subordinate Clause	Describes verb, adverd, or adjective. Begins with subordinating conjunction (if, when, where, because, afar, since)
Noun Subordiante Clause	can act as the subject, d.o., i.o., p.n., o.p., app. Begins with How, what, that, whoever, which, whatever
Simple Sentence	One independent clause (Falling down, the girl cried)
Compound sentence	two independent clause (Tom was late{;} he had an excuse) (Tom was late {,FANBOYS} he had an excuse) (Tom was late {:AC,} he had an excuse)
Adverbial compound	However, morever, in addition to, therefore
Complex sentences	one independent clause and at least one subordinate clause (If subordinate clause comes first, theres a comma) (While dad slept, mom made dinner) (Mom made dinner while dad slept)
Compound-complex sentences	Two independendent clauses + at least one subordinate clause (Carol like rock concerts and the symphony{, but} Peter relishes those quiet nights at home when he can relax)
