change of heart
The firm decision to love God and our neighbors more than ourselves. This means that we do our best to give up sin, to pray more, and to do good to others. It is sometimes called conversion.
examination of conscience
The time we spend in thinking about our sins in order to do better in the future. The examination of conscience is an important way to have a change of heart and to prepare for the sacrament of Penance.
mercy
The loving-kindness that God has for mankind. Because God is merciful He forgives us our sins and brings us to Heaven. Christ commands each one of us to be merciful to others, forgiving them whatever wrongs they have done to us.
penance
The practice of self-denial by such acts as fasting, giving money to the poor, and spending extra time in prayer. The purpose of penance is to help us have a change of heart so that we may grow in love for God and our neighbors.
