Viruses
-Smallest of all microorganisms (50 times smaller than a bacterium)
-'Intracellular parasites' (they can exist and reproduce as parasites only in the cells of other living organisms) |
Structure of Viruses
-Have geometric shapes with similar basic structures.
-Some viruses have an envelope. -They have a protein coat called a Capsid made of simple repeating unis known as Capsomeres -Viral genetic material is either DAN (double stranded) or RNA (single stranded). |
Viral behavior
-Viral DNA acts directly as a template for new viral DNA or for mRNAs for protein synthesis.
-Bacteriophages attack bacteria and use them for reproduction. -Viruses attach to their host cells by means of specific proteins (antigens) known as virus attachment particles (VAPs). |
Examples of DNA viruses?
smallpox, adenoviruses (which cause colds, etc) and bacteriophages.
Examples of RNA viruses?
tobacco mosaic virus and HIV.
