ASPD v. Criminality
criminal is a legal term denoting conviction for breaking a law
1. not all people with ASPD are
-criminals
-psychopaths
2. not all people in jail or criminals have ASPD

4. most people with ASPD or psychopathy are NOT in jail
DSM Criteria for ASPD
A. Pattern of disregard for and violation of rights of others occurring since age 15 as indicated by 3 or more
1. failure to conform to social norms
2. repeated lying/conning
3. impulsivity or failure to plan ahead
4. irritability and aggressiveness
5. reckless disregard for safety
6. consistent responsibility
7. lack of remorse

C. evidence of conduct disorder before age 15

Prevalence of ASPD
1. rates across all races, cultures, and ethnic groups
-higher in males
-1% in general population
-15-20% of prisoners
2. common among abusers, con artists, gang members, corrupt politicians, unethical lawyers and doctors, terrorists, cult leaders
3. Recidivism 2x other offenders, violent recidivism 3x
4. IQ tends to predict who gets incarcerated
Early Childhood predictors
1. co-morbid AD/HD+conduct disorder diagnosis most at risk for severely aggressive ASPD or psychopathy
-called fledgling psychopaths
2. parental antisocial behaviors *esp. fathers
3. poor parenting ( neglect, abuse, lack of excessive disciplining)
Biological Explanations
1. under arousal hypothesis * linked with ADHD
2. low fear hypothesis
3. link w/ substance abuse
4. brain abnormalities
-64% of violent people have abnormal frontal lobes
-50% brain atrophy
-40% EEG abnormalities
-ratio of abnormalities of violent to normal is 31:1
Psychological Explanations
Learning theory
-psychopaths learning improves when anxiety increased
-respond to punishment if near certainty, but do not suppress behavior if highly uncertain
Psychodynamic
-underdeveloped super ego due to poor parenting
Cognitive
-do unto others before they do unto you
Sociocultural Explanations
1. gender expression
-males= physical aggression c. females = relational aggression
2. rates of ASPD much higher in U.S. than Britain
-much lower rates in highly collectivist cultures (china, japan, taiwan)
Tx
-most don't seek tx for ASPD
-NO tx shown to be efficacious
-more likely to end up in jail than in tx
-will NOT work w/o social support and refraining from substance use/abuse
-focus is on prevention - target antisocial children

FAST (families and schools together) track program
-CBT training for 400 at-risk Kin. students
-by 9th grade 75% reduction in conduct disorder and 53% for AD/HD compared to control group
-$58,000 per child for 10 yr program vs. 1.2 million for rehab, incarceration and costs to victim
