Superficial veins
Small saphenous vein
Great saphenous vein • accessory saphenous, superficial external pudendal, superficial epigastric and superficial circumflex iliac veins all join the saphenous vein at proximal end |
• small saphenous vein - arises from
lateral end of dorsal venous arch (drains to popliteal vein in the popliteal fossa
• great saphenous vein - arises from
the medial end of the dorsal venous arch, passes anterior to medial malleolus, posterior to medial epicondyle of femur and passes anteromedial on thigh
• sural nerve - parallel to
the small saphenous vein (on calf of leg), innervates skin of lateral aspect of ankle and foot
Superior Cluneal
(dorsal rami, L1-L3), innervates upper buttock
Middle Cluneal
dorsal rami, S1-S3), innervates middle buttock
Inferior Cluneal
(branch of posterior cutaneous n.), innervates lower buttock
• posterior cutaneous nerve of thigh
- deep to fascia, innervates thigh/popliteal fossa
• lateral femoral cutaneous n
innervates skin of lateral thigh
• anterior cutaneous branches of femoral n
- innervates skin of anterior thigh (located lateral to great saphenous vein)
• cutaneous branches of obturator n.
- innervate skin of medial thigh
• saphenous nerve
- branch of femoral n., accompanies great saphenous vein into leg (pierces fascia), innervates the skin on anterior/medial surface of ankle/foot
• superficial fibular nerve
found on distal 1/3rd of leg on lateral side, gives off dorsal digital nerves that innervates space between 1st and 2nd toe
- thigh fascia
leg fascia foot fascia |
fascia lata
crural fascia pedal fascia |
Illiotibial tract
lateral portion of fascia lata (runs from iliac tubercle to lateral condyle of tibia, IT band is another name for the tract, gluteus maximus inserts on the IT band
• inferior gluteal nerve
only nerve supply to gluteus maximus
• superior gluteal artery
supplies gluteal muscles as it exits above the piriformis muscle within the greaer sciatic notch
• superior gluteal nerve
runs with superior gluteal a., innervates gluteus medius and minimus as well as tensor fasciae latae
Piriformis
o: Anterior surface of sacrum between anterior sacral foramina
i: Medial side of superior border of greater trochanter of femur n: Branches from L5, S1, S2 f: Laterally rotates the extended femur at hip joint; abducts flexed femur at hip joint |
Obturator internus
o: Anterolateral wall of true pelvis; deep surface of obturator membrane and surrounding bone
i: Medial side of greater trochanter of femur n: Nerve to obturator internus (L5, S1) f: Laterally rotates the extended femur at hip joint; abducts flexed femur at hip joint |
Gemellus superior
o: External surface of ischial spine
i: Along length of superior surface of the obturator internus tendon and into the medial side of greater trochanter of femur with obturator internus tendon n: Nerve to obturator internus (L5, S1) f: Laterally rotates the extended femur at hip joint; abducts flexed femur at hip joint |
Gemellus inferior
o: Upper aspect of ischial tuberosity
i: Along length of inferior surface of the obturator internus tendon and into the medial side of greater trochanter of femur with obturator internus tendon n: Nerve to quadratus femoris (L5, S1) f: Laterally rotates the extended femur at hip joint; abducts flexed femur at hip joint |
Quadratus femoris
o: Lateral aspect of the ischium just anterior to the ischial tuberosity
i: Quadrate tubercle on the intertrochanteric crest of the proximal femur n: Nerve to quadratus femoris (L5, S1) f: Laterally rotates femur at hip joint |
Gluteus minimus
o: External surface of ilium between inferior and anterior gluteal lines
i: Linear facet on the anterolateral aspect of the greater trochanter n: Superior gluteal nerve (L4, L5, S1) f: Abducts femur at hip joint; holds pelvis secure over stance leg and prevents pelvic drop on the opposite swing side during walking; medially rotates thigh |
Gluteus medius
o: External surface of ilium between anterior and posterior gluteal lines
i: Elongate facet on the lateral surface of the greater trochanter n: Superior gluteal nerve (L4, L5, S1) f: Abducts femur at hip joint; holds pelvis secure over stance leg and prevents pelvic drop on the opposite swing side during walking; medially rotates thigh |
Gluteus maximus
o: Fascia covering gluteus medius, external surface of ilium behind posterior gluteal line, fascia of erector spinae, dorsal surface of lower sacrum, lateral margin of coccyx, external surface of sacrotuberous ligament
i: Posterior aspect of iliotibial tract of fascia lata and gluteal tuberosity of proximal femur n: Inferior gluteal nerve (L5, S1, S2) f: Powerful extensor of flexed femur at hip joint; lateral stabilizer of hip joint and knee joint; laterally rotates and abducts thigh |
Tensor fasciae latae
o: Lateral aspect of crest of ilium between anterior superior iliac spine and tubercle of the crest
i: Iliotibial tract of fascia lata n: Superior gluteal nerve (L4, L5, S1) f: Stabilizes the knee in extension |
