Define an organic compound
An organic compound is composed of molecules that contain carbon–carbon covalent bonds, carbon–hydrogen covalent bonds, or both kinds of bonds.
What is the difference between dehydration synthesis and hydrolysis?
In dehydration synthesis, reactants combine only after hydrogen and oxygen atoms are removed and the leftovers form water. Hydrolysis, on the other hand, is where water disrupts the bonds in large molecules, causing them to be broken down into smaller molecules. These two reactions are opposites.
Does an acid have a low pH or a high pH?
An acid has a low pH
Does a base have a low pH or a high pH?
A base has a high pH
Which type of organic molecule does a monosaccharide form?
Monosaccharides: carbohydrates
Which type of organic molecule does a fatty acid form?
Fatty acids: triglycerides
Which type of organic molecule does an amino acid form?
Amino acids: protein
Which type of organic molecule does a nucleotide form?
Nucleotides: nucleic acid
Why is the structure of protein molecules important?
The folded shape of a protein molecule determines its role in body chemistry.
What is the role of DNA in the body?
It is the “master code” for assembling proteins and other nucleic acids in the body.
What is the role of ATP in the body?
ATP plays an important energy-transfer role in the body. It picks up energy from nutrients and then quickly makes the energy available to cellular processes.
