Inferior triangle of the neck: borders
anterior midline, anterior border of SCM, inferior border of mandible/angle of mandible to mastoid process
Inferior triangle of the neck: roof and floor
roof: investing cervical fasciae
floor: vertebral column with anterior prevertebral muscles
Inferior triangle of the neck: subtriangles
submental (small top left), submandibular (top right), carotid (bottom right), visceral (bottom left)
submental triangle contents
mylohyoid muscle, submental lymph nodes, anterior jugular veins
submandibular triangle contents
submandibular lymph nodes, submandibular gland, hypoglossal nerve, parotid gland
carotid triangle contents
carotid bifurcation, carotid body and sinus, hypoglossal nerve
visceral triange contents
thyroid gland, larynx, trachea, espohagus
neck fascia layers: names and organizations
superficial layer, investing layer, infrahyoid layer (muscles), carotid sheath (common carotid, internal jugular)
visceral fascia (organs)
- pretrachial- thyroids/parathyroids, anterior
- buccopharyngeal- posterior of pharynx
prevertebral fascia
alar fascia
makes T shape, precursor to prevertebral
fascia danger zone
prevertebral space
facial expression muscle: innervation and derivation
derived from second pharyngeal arch, innervated by facial nerve (C7)
Inferior triangle of the neck: superficial veins
anterior jugular veins, exterior jugular veins, arch of jugular vein
Inferior triangle of the neck: superficial nerves
greater auricular, transverse cervical, supraclavicular

motor: cervical branch of facial nerve
infrahyoid muscles
innervated by C1-C3 of ventral rami (ansa cervacalis), used in vocalization and swallowing

thyrohyoid only innervated by C1
thyroid glands
thyroid - has right and left lobe, isthmus in middle.
Cricothyroid cartilage above it, middle of that is pyramidal lobe
parathyroid glands
posterior to thyroid glands, 2 pairs - inferior and superior. superior and inf thyroid artery runs near them
Thyroid gland covering
Internal layer is thin and divides gland into lobules, connected to external gland which is tough, between is space with parathyroid glands
Thyroid gland blood supply
External carotid - superior thryoid artery

Subclavian artery - Thyrocervical trunk - inferior thyroid artery

be careful for thyroid ima artery when getting to trachea
Thyroid gland innervations:
vagus nerve (with carotid art and internal jugular vein), superior laryngeal nerve - external (lateral) and internal (medial), right recurrent laryngeal nerve (usual left), left recurrent laryngeal nerve (usual right)
Thyroid gland drainage
superior and middle thyroid vein - internal jugular.
inferior thyroid vein - left brachiocephalic vein

Thyroid venous plexus
Thyroid gland lymph nodes organization
superficial and deep rings connected by deep cervical trunk
thryoid gland lymph nodes
superior deep cervical, inferior deep cervical, prelaryngeal, pretracheal, paratracheal
thyroid gland development
starts at basal midline of tongue and migrates to tracheal cartilage
parathyroid gland development
superior pair from fourth pharyngeal arch, inferior pair from the third pharyngeal arch

ultimobranchial body (has parafollucular cells that secrete calcitonin) is from fifth pharyngeal arch
Cysts and fistulas in neck
Medial cysts and fistulas are remnants of thyroglossal duct, failure to regress - cyst (neck mass)
lateral cysts/fistulas remnants of ductal portions of cervical sinus, from tissue migration during embryonic development
