Epidemiology
|
-Infects cows and other grazing animals
-Zoonotic: can infect humans who have close contact with infected animals |

Etiology
|
Caused by Bacillus anthracis, an endospore-forming soil bacterium

Transmission: 3 Types

1. Skin (cutaneous)
2. lungs (inhalation) 3. digestive (gastrointestinal) |

Pathogenesis
|
1. Endospores reach tissues, germinate, secret necrotizing toxin
2. On Skin: form eschars – pustular lesions which fill with black fluid 3. Reaches blood = septisemia, usually fatal |

Pathogenesis (Effects w/ signs and symptoms)
|
Signs and symptoms may appear in few days or several weeks; if not treated within 48 hours nearly 100% mortality

Treatment
|
A. Rx: Cipro, penicillin, doxycycline for 4-8 weeks
B. Vaccine (reserved for military) |
