Portuguese Explorer who wanted to find a sea route to the Spice Islands sailing west around the American continent. In 1520, he led an expedition around the Southern Straight of South America. He died during the expedition, but his crew was the first to circumnavigate the world.

An English explorer sponsored by the Dutch East India Co. who sailed up the river which now bears his name in 1609. He reached present day Albany and set Dutch territorial claims for New Amsterdam (NYC) and the Hudson Bay area.

1577 to 1580 circumnavigated the world as an English privateer in service of Queen Elizabeth. Famous for raiding Spanish ships and helping lead to the Spanish Armada.
