Arthroplasty is what?
the reconstruction or replacement of a joint
What are 3 reasons for one?
-relieves pain
-improves/maintains ROM
-corrects deformities
What are 3 types of arthroplasty?
-Hemiarthroplasty
-total replacement
-reshaping of the bones of the joints
Replacement can happen where?
-elbow

THA (total hip) allows for what?
Provides pain relief and improved function for Pt's with R/OA
The implant can be either cementless or cemented what's the difference?
-cementless- lasts longer, allows ingrowth of bony tissue
-cemented is usually used for elderly Pt's
Avoid Post Op care THA
-extreme internal rotation
-adduction
-90 degree or more flexion
for 4-6 wks
Other Post Op care THA
-use abduction pillow
-hips higher than knees
-knees kept apart
-never cross legs
-use trochanter roll to prevent external rotation
-keep pillows between legs when turning
-ambulate as prescribed
-elevate, extend and support
RN care for Post Op THA
monitor for
-infection
-circulation
-site
-drainage (JP)
-CBC
-keep embolic stocking in place
-have Pt flex and extend feet/ankels (prevent clots)
what other 2 things may happen with a THA Pt?
-prophylactic antibiotic
-turn cough deep breath
