What is CSF?
|
It is a clear colorless liquid that fills the ventricles and canals of the CNS and bathes its external surface.

About how much CSF is produced every day?
|
It produces about 500 mL per day, but the fluid is constantly reabsorbed at the same rate and only about 100-160 mL is normally present at any one time.

How does CSF production begin?
|
It begins with the filtration of blood plasma through the capillaries of the brain. Ependymal cells modify the filtrate.

|
Yes. The CSF has more sodium and chloride than blood plasma, but less potassium, calcium and glucose, and very little protein.

|

|
It protects the brain from striking the cranium when the head is jolted, though this is still possible depending on the gravity of the trauma.

|
