What is occupational exposure?
pers w/reasonable risk tof skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other infectious material when protective attire is not used.
Direct exposure:
occurs directly through contact w/pt's blood and salive
Indirect exposure:
Contact with contaminated instruments, equipment, laundry, trash, and infectious waste
The process of preventing the access of micro-organisms
asepsis
The use of rubber, plastic, paper, foil or other fluid resistant materials to cover surfaces and protcet them from contamination
barrier technique
The number of micro-organisms contaminating an object.
Bioburden (aka bioload or microbial load)
bacterial endospore test designed to assess whether sterilization has occurred.
biological monitor(aka bio indicator or bio spore test)
a diagnostic test of a prevacuum sterizilzer's ability to remove air from the chamber and prevent air reentrant. Not a steriliry assurance test.
bowie-dick test
the destruction or inhibition of most viruses and bacteria while in their active growth phase. Process does not necessarily kill all spores nor can it be verified by a monitor
Chemical disinfection
The presence or reasonably expected presence of blood or other portentially infectious material on an item or surface
Contaminated
The propagation and growth of micro-organisms or living tissue cells in or on a nutrient medium
Culture
Critical item classification
Instruments and materials that penetrate the skin, mucous membranes, or bone. Must be sterile before use.
Semicritical item Classification
Instruments, equipment, or materials that frequently contact mucous mombrane but cannot be sterilized due to their design or inability to withstand heat. At a minimum, these require high-level disinfection.
Non-critical item classification
Instruments, equipment, or materials that do not normally penetrate or contact mucous mombranes but which are exposed to splatter, spray, or splashing of blood, or are touched by contaminated hands. Require intermediate-level disinfection
Saturated Steam Sterilization
Process which uses steam heat under pressure for sufficient length of time to kill all forms of micro-organisms
Sterilizer (Gravity Displacement Type)
incoming steam displaces the residual air through a port or drain usually in or near the bttom of the sterilizer chamber.
Time and temps for Sterilizer (gravity displacement type)
30 min/ 250-254F and 15-17PSI
15min/ 270-274F and 30-32PSI |
HBV/HIV testing after exposure follow-up testing
6 weeks, 12 weeks, 6 months
at the begining of each workday, flush each unit water line and hoses for at least?
1 minute. Begin with cup filler and cuspidor even if their us is not anticipated.
After each pt, remove handpiece, lubricate and run for?
30 Seconds. THis removes any potentially infectious material from the retraction of coolant water during previous treatment.
When using non-autoclavable handpieces, how do you disinfect?
Flush tubing for 1 min at beginning of each day and 30 seconds in between pts to purge tubing contaminants. Lubricate sterilized or disinfected handpieces and run for 15 seconds directing spray into HVE.
Dental procedures usually generat aerosol particles that average?
1.3 microns in diameter. Anything less than 5 microns in diameter can penetrate terminal bronchioles and alveoli. where a mask
Pt's should brush their teeth or rinse w/a mouthwash prior to treatment reducing the microbial concentration of their oral flora by _______ with ______ ________second rinses.
97%
3 10-second |
Infectious waste is also termed what?
regulated waste
38. What type of sterilizer relies on one or more pressure and vacuum excursions at the beginning or end of the cycle?
Prevaccum type
What is the operating temperature of the Prevacuum type sterilizer?
132-135
At a minimum, all personnel will receive initial training within how ma ny days of reporting aboard?
W/in 90days, then annually
