What type of tissue is cartilage?	Connective tissue, weaker than bone, but more flexible and resilient.
What type of cells does cartilage contain?	Chondroblasts that form in chondrocyte
What is a chondrocyte?	The only cell found in the cartilage, they produce and maintain the cartilagenous matrix
Is Mature cartilage vascular?	No, it's avascular or not penetrated by bv's.
What are the 3major functions of cartilage in the body?	1. C-shaped hyaline cartilage rings keep walls of the trachea and smaller airways open 2.Provides a gliding surface at articulations where two bones meet. 3. provides a model for thef formation of most of the bones in the body.

What are the 3 types of cartilage?	Hyaline cartilage, fibrocartilage, elastic cartilage
What is the most abundant type of cartilage, where is it found and what are its characteristics?	Hyaline cartilage; found in the trachea, larynx, and the articular (joint) cartilage on bones, growth plates, and the fetal skeleton; translucent (hyaline) appearance.

What characteristics make up Fibrocartilage, where is it found?	Extracellular matrix w/ numerous thick collagen fibers that help resist both stretching and compaction forces. Acts as a SHOCK ABSORBER; between the vertebrae
What type of cartilage is most pliable and least stable? Where is this cartilage typically found?	Elastic cartilage, found in regions requiring highly flexible support: external ear, the ear canal, and the epiglottis.
